Abstract

Objective: To enhance the knowledge about use of ozone in dentistry particularly in the field of conservative dentistry and endodontics.

Methods: A Pubmed literature search with specific indexing terms and hand search was made. The authors assessed after reading the abstracts and hand searching the reference lists of the retrieved publications. After interpretation only studies relevant to conservative dentistry and endodontics were included in the review.

Results: Ozone has a high oxidation potential and has antimicrobial properties against bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. It has been shown to stimulate remineralization of carious teeth. It can also be used for the eradication of microorganisms from the root canal system. Ozone therapy presents a potential for an atraumatic, biologically based treatment for conditions encountered in conservative dentistry and endodontics.

Conclusion: Ozone can be used in remineralizing of dental caries and as root canal disinfectant.
